A Weekend in Philly

Hi all! I've avoided writing for quite some time, mostly because i've been stuck in a stage of my life where i'm completely confused with my career path and even personal interests. Although I haven't been writing for leisure lately, I know that it'll always be an activity I enjoy doing to let out my emotional stress during this quarter life crisis.

As a way to get away from my frustration for a little while, my boyfriend and I decided to take a small mini-cation to Philadelphia. We stayed at an Airbnb, which was a quaint brick apartment owned by a sweet, quiet woman and her husband, only 15 minutes from University City. I've never really saw myself living in a city like Philly in the future, though this weekend really made me fall in love with how unique its culture is and appreciation for the arts (and good food).

The worst part of being in Philly was having to get there in the first place, which entailed a 5 hour long bus ride while sitting in the stiffest, most itchy seat ever. The entire bus smelled like a porta potty, though the feeling of finally getting off that bus and spotting the person you love most, waiting for you with the biggest grin, makes the entire ride worth it.

Saturday was honestly one of the most memorable days I've ever experienced in my life. We woke up early that day and ate at Sabrina's cafe- a home style breakfast place which served the best banana and vanilla bean stuffed waffle. Seriously, that one dish probably had a day's worth of serving of sugar, but it was pure bliss. I didn't finish it all, which I still regret to this day :(

Afterwards, we headed to the Eastern State Penitentiary, one of the oldest and biggest historical prison systems in the US. Some of the tour took place outdoors... and of course it was freezing cold along with pouring rain, and we just so happened to forget our jackets back at home. The prison was eerie but in an appealing kind of way. There's just something so fascinating about stepping back into the past and seeing how other people, let alone prisoners, lived during that time period. I admit the place was pretty creepy and I constantly kept looking behind me to make sure no ghostly presence was there. We spent an hour and a half there, walking down long corridors and looking through rotting, dim cells.

Because Eastern State was Andy's idea to visit, after we got to go to a place that I personally love: The Philadelphia Museum of Art. Although my art abilities are much to be desired (i'm really good at stick figures!), I still have an affinity for admiring different works of art and just being in a museum. We spent a good three hours just looking at art, and also fooling around by taking stupid pictures in front of paintings.

It was already 4 pm by the time we got out of the museum, but I was determined to see the social media famous Magic Gardens on South Street. We quickly got in an Uber and made it right before its last viewing. Magic Gardens is definitely a place you have to visit if you're ever in Philly. Not only is it picture worthy (and makes a great Instagram picture), it's mind blowing to know that someone put together all of those mosaic pieces on the walls.

We had a fancy dinner afterwards at a bar called The Hungry Pigeon, though I paid $18 for 6 pieces of ravioli (i'm still pretty salty about that). Since we both are a really classy couple, we ate again after at Jimmy John's and then had an egg waffle with ice cream!

The most bittersweet moment of the weekend and for any long distance couple is having to say goodbye. We said ours at the bus terminal where we first got off Friday night, hugging each other tightly until it was time for us to get back on the bus and go back to our colleges. I hate having to say goodbye, though I know that soon we will be able to see each other again and someday even go on bigger vacations. If you're also a LDR couple reading this, keep holding on and make sure to make special visits for each other!

Until next time,
➵KW
